Fit a pci express x16 graphics card into a standard pci express port?

-Is it possible to fit a pcie x16 graphics card into a standard pcie port?

I wanna upgrade my card but wanna be sure that its possible beforePCI Express slots come in x1, x4, x8 and x16 lengths.



If the back of the slot is open, you can put a longer video card (x16) into a shorter slot (x4) with a minor performance penalty. Most shorter slots have a back edge that will block the video card from fitting, however.
