Can I install a 1GB RAM stick into my Mac?

-I know nothing about RAM (except for what it stands for lol). Either way, I was wondering if I needed to upgrade to 2GB from 1GB is it possible to just install another 1GB RAM stick inside my Mac or do I need to buy one that is 2GB?
